Melendez is keen to make a move from Strikeforce across to the UFC, following in the footsteps of some of the top names from Strikeforce. He still has four fights left on his Strikeforce contract and is happy fighting for that organization, but really wants the recognition that goes with the UFC. Right now his immediate plan is to defend his title in Strikeforce and see what happens after that.
Melendez clearly has a lot of respect for Frankie Edgar but is also confident that he can cause problems for the UFC lightweight champion and sees himself as the #1 contender.
