Alvaro Romano was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1956. He had a very active childhood and was physically engaged on many levels, though he never experienced the use of supplementary exercises to enhance sports performance. His interest in sports led him to pursue surfing and through his new love he came into contact with Rolls Gracie, from whom he learned about the Gracie diet prior to beginning his study of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Alvaro's passion for understanding and bettering his physical education led him to begin studying it formally in 1977, a year after commencing BJJ. Five years later Alvaro began studying Hatha Yoga and training for the triathlon.
From this blend of physical pursuits, Ginastica Natural (Natural Fitness) was born. The movements are heavily influenced by the ground work of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu but combined with an emphasis on correct breathing from Hatha Yoga. The patterns of movement are characterized by constant motion that works together numerous body postures and exercises. Conditioning is achieved through the use of one's body weight, dynamic stretching and different breathing techniques.
In the video below you can see how Alvaro combines various simple exercises and body movement patterns to give himself a good workout that is dynamic and challenging.
