For background information on this kata please refer to Heian Shodan. This kata is one of five created by Itosu sensei to be used in teaching Okinawan school children at the turn of the century. The original series is the Pinan kata but the name - as well as the order in which the kata were presented - was changed by Funakoshi sensei on mainland Japan.
