At the time of writing Lyoto Machida is the former UFC Light Heavyweight World Champion. He was defeated by Mauricio Rua at UFC 113 and his next fight will be against Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson at UFC 123. Until his loss against Rua Machida enjoyed a 16-0 undefeated record.
While many MMA fighters use a blend of boxing, Muay Thai, Western wrestling and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Machida has a strong background in Shotokan karate, having been taught by his father, himself a famous karate master, from an early age. This karate training has been supplemented with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, wrestling and sumo. These later arts though do not define Machida's style, which is, for the MMA world, regarded as being highly unorthodox. His approach to stand up fighting is heavily influenced by his experience in point fighting which encourages footwork, whole body evasion (as opposed to dodging and weaving which uses only the upper body) and a greater emphasis on timing. Further, Machida obeys the maxim prevalent in Shotokan karate to treat the opponent's limbs like swords whereby one stroke would be fatal.
In this first video Lyoto Machida introduces his art ('Machida Karate') and goes through a basic stretching / warm up routine. The stretching exercises begin at 2:30.
