Last week we looked at some basic Muay Thai strikes with the elbow and how to use the elbow as an offensive weapon. In the following video you can study some different techniques for defending against an elbow strike.

Muay Thai Elbow: Defensive Options

* You can block the incoming elbow strike. Move forwards into the attack while raising your forearms. Make sure that your chin is tucked down but keep your eyes looking up.

The problem with this option is that while it stops the initial elbow attack you are still in a defensive position, allowing your opponent to follow up with more elbow strikes.

* A second option is to use one arm to block the elbow strike while using your own elbow to attack the lower forearm or wrist of the arm delivering the attack against you.

Although this defensive option will cause damage to your opponent, that damage is not against his elbow and you are not taking the initiative away from him, allowing him to once again continue launching attacks.

* A third option is to drive one of your arms (the opposite arm to the one your opponent is using to attack with his elbow strike) into his shoulder while using the free hand to check his elbow as a safeguard.

The shoulder check can itself be a strike and can damage your opponent.

* A variation on the shoulder press is to use one arm to push into your opponent, reaching up to his shoulder and behind his neck to gain control while simultaneously using your forearm to strike his incoming forearm.

* The best defense is to simply allow the Muay Thai elbow attack to bypass you while moving yourself into an advantageous position, preferably behind your opponent.

Use your own arms to both check the attack and control the direction of your opponent. Maintain contact once the elbow strike has been evaded. This will allow you to be sensitive to any further attacks he may launch.

Once you are behind your opponent you have numerous vulnerable targets to attack while your opponent is very limited in what he can do back to you.
