In the past Penn was a hero for Diaz and both were friends. They both needed to be persuaded to take this fight after Nick lost his chance to face GSP over no-showing for two different press conferences which resulted in Carlos Condit being moved up to face St Pierre and leaving Penn without a fight.
Diaz talks about how he got into Brazilian Jiu Jitsu after a troubled school life and his work ethic. Nick enjoyed tremendous early success in the WEC before moving onto the UFC then go Strikeforce.
Penn has also always been a world class fighter. Known as The Prodigy for his skill in BJJ the only weak point, widely acknowledged, is his cardio. Every camp this seems to be a recurring problem (except for UFC 107 vs Diego Sanchez) and BJ has tried something new again here, hoping to get it right.
