BE PREPARED… The Boy Scout Motto “Be Prepared” is good advice for all Scouts, regardless of age. The word “prepare” is derived from and relates to many kinds of actions. In a general sense, it means to “fit, adapt or qualify for a particular purpose, end, use, service or state.” We prepare ground for seed; we prepare cloth for use; we prepare medicines by pulverization and mixture; we prepare young people for college by previous instruction. Men and women are prepared for professions by suitable study. Wholeness of heart is necessary to prepare men and women for a life of service, particularly in the ministry, and for the enjoyment of happiness with others. In the truest sense, to “be prepared,” for a Boy Scout, simply means that he’s getting ready to deal with whatever situation arises. For example, he prepares for the “Court of Honor,” which takes place each month when merit badges and promotions are announced. It is exciting that in the process of preparing he is learning how to set and reach goals. Most of the goals, at that point, are short-range but if the overall goal is to be an Eagle Scout, he literally is setting a “big” and “long-range” goal. Setting and reaching goals prepares a Scout for life and for whatever career he might choose. The athlete must prepare for the upcoming contest and the musician for the upcoming concert. The doctor must prepare for surgery and the minister for his sermon. The household executive must prepare for the evening meal and the salesperson for the presentation. The habit of preparation is one of the magnificent benefits that come from being a Boy Scout. That’s the reason Scouting is so beneficial in our society today and is especially helpful for youngsters who have only one parent. Think about it…prepare properly, and I will…SEE YOU AT THE TOP!
